why are we so frightenly able to dismiss other people's humanity? On racism against Roma people in Italy. It's very disturbing.http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2008/aug/17/familyandrelationships.romaIt is an image that shocked the world: two young Gypsy children lie dead for three hours on an Italian beach while, feet away, a carefree couple enjoy a leisurely picnic. Dan McDougall travels to the Roma camps of Naples to meet the dead girls' mother and finds fear and bitterness - and a country in danger of forgetting its far-Right past( Read more... )I hope this doesn't sound overtly philosophical-what I really want to do is basically draw attention to a concrete (horrible) reality in contemporary Italy, but oh_annalouise's post prompted me to think on posting this about why institutionalised prejudices such as racism completely mess up any kind of empathy we might have had to begin with when reacting to the deaths of certain 'types' of people (ugh). It boggles my mind that as humans we are so able to let society shape our prejudices and worldview, to ingrain us with such racism/hatred/a horrific kind of indifference. |

Back to school I'm entering my 3rd year of college, and while I've done OK academically so far, I haven't made much progress socially. This year I decided to live in a co-op with a bunch of people I don't know, and part of me is wondering if this is a good idea, while a bigger part of me is optimistic that this will be a worthwhile experience, and besides, it beats living alone. if I can just finally make some friends, it will have been worth it. I do wish I had a better mindset coming into this whole situation though, having a lack of friends always makes me feel kind of lame and inferior, then I start wondering why anyone would bother befriending little ol' me, what do I have to offer? It's a difficult pattern of thoughts to break, but hopefully things will work out. anyone want to share their goals for the new school year? Current Mood: anxiousCurrent Music: sigur ros |

Disovery of ancient Mayan caves linked to the entrance to the Underworld Two articles about the recent discovery of caves believed to have been thought by the Maya to have been passageways to the Underworld, Xibalba. From the Thaindian News. ( Article #1 behind cut. )From the LA Times. ( Article #2 behind cut. )Also, here's a link to an English translation of the Popol Vuh, the ancient Maya text, since it's mentioned in the articles: Popol Vuh.What do you guys think? Tired LaLa Panda. Wow, I haven't been this tired in a very long time. Yesterday, Jaymz and I went to see the Traveling Pants movie in the cinema. It almost made me cry during two parts of it which is totally insane because it shows that I am a major girl. We also went shopping. I bought two pretty sweet shirts that were on sale at Old Navy and that was basically the bulk of my spending so I am actually really proud of myself. After shopping and going to the movies, Jaymz and I came home to watch Degrassi with Al and eat dinner while we waited for Stephen to come over to come collect me so we could go watch a movie at his place. Once Stephen made his way here we all sat around for a while eating vegan brownies and being awesome. At some point Stephen and I finally left and went over to his place to watch Signs. We ended up talking until like 4am after we watched the movie. We sort of just passed out. Right now I am BEYOND tired. I barely did anything today besides run around with Stephen for a bit this afternoon and then went shopping with Jaymz. She is looking for a sweet business looking vest that is vegan friendly. We came home empty handed but it was fun to get out and walk around for a bit. But now I just want to lay down and sleep. I am going to force myself to stay up tho because I know if I take a nap I will not sleep thru the whole night. Man...I need to drink some tea or something. Ugh, I have to go to work tomorrow night. I feel like my weekend was way to short. Current Mood: sleepyCurrent Music: the way you make me feel by Michael Jackson |

APPLICATION PROCESS CHANGE Hi everyone, The mods would like to announce a change in the application procedure to join feminist. From here on out, in order to be accepted, prospective members will need to email the mod team explaining a) why they consider themselves feminist, if they do, and b) why they would like to join feminist. We're mostly doing this to cut down on possible arbitrariness in the application process, as well as to give prospectives a chance to advocate for their acceptance. It has always been our policy that rejected members can email us to be reconsidered, so this cuts out the middle step. Thanks for being a great community! itihasa (on behalf of the mod team) |

Nerd roast! So I am updating my lovely live journal from the comforts of Jaymz's dining room. She is making a tofu stir fry lunch and dancing around with her cats. From the looks of it, its shaping up to be a pretty rad Sunday. Yesterday, after I left work and had to rush home an pack to make my trip out to the lovely Worcester, MA, I went to my friend Cross's surprise birthday party for a bit. When I got there I was totally out of it due to the fact that I was rather hungry and there was a bunch of people there I didn't know. I hugged Cross and sat with Jaymz and Al at out 'vegan' table. HAHA! But to my surprise the food that was vegan friendly was then GONE! Which was rather lame because I was running on a fruit salad and chai tea for most of the day. The party was full of comic/video game nerds. It was cute. They had fun making fun of the nerdness of everyone in the room and the super nerdom that is Cross. Good times indeed. At some point while I was there I had to order a cheese-less pizza because I thought I was going to pass out. The pizza was surprisingly delicious since it's hard to find a decent cheese-less pizza at places. I know that might sound crazy to some non-vegans but it's really true. It was pretty delightful. After the party, we headed back to Worcester and the original plan was me and Jaymz were going to let our uterus shine through and watch The sisterhood of the traveling pants, to get ready for the awesome sequel that we are going to see today. We were going to have a vagina movie party and be all girly at each other and it was going to be awesome. But her husband wasn't to excited about the idea so I had the smarts to call up our friend Stephen to have him come entertain her husband and play video games. It worked out well but our vagina party was over way before the dude video game party was, so we ended up hanging out with both of them while they were playing video games for a while until we both had to retire. Apparently they played video games until like 3am. Wow, dudes, sure know how to party. Jaymz's cat Squee, totally doesn't want to be my friend today and it's annoying because she is only my second favorite cat in the world. My other favorite cat eva is Kone, who resides with my wife, Melissa. Kone is such a little gentlemen.I should have took him to my prom when I was in high school. Okay, I am going to attempt to find my phone charger, then eat lunch, and start my day. Before I go, Al (Jaymz's husband) just had to inform us that his poop had a green hard shell around it, like the ice cream chocolate shell that you can put on your ice cream. I thought that was great enough to share with the rest of the world. Current Mood: cheerfulCurrent Music: blue by a perfect circle |

Yahoo! Japan Avatars I have a quick question. Does anyone have a direct link to the Yahoo! Japan Avatar page? It’s been a long time since I’ve been to that part of the site, because after a while the original link became less obvious. And my computer screws up Japanese text. I’m not even sure if it still exists, though I assume it is because it seems to be a Yahoo! Wide feature. Anyway, whenever I'd get bored, I'd play around with it. I miss it. TT^TT BTW, this is what the Japanese avatars look like, in case you have no idea what I’m referring to.
Anyway, thanks Current Mood: bored |

sun burn Well I'm back from vacation.... I managed to escape with relatively little sunburn! So that's a great thing.... I used sunblock like crazy. So I love the beach and all but I HATE feeling all nasty and sandy and salty. That's just no good..... luckily our condo was right on the beach so we were able to drive to it in less than a minute. I think for the next week I'm going to be a complete bum.... it's the last week of summer and my last week home before going back up to school so I'm going to bum around. I'll probably make a trip up to school in order to take some stuff but other than that, that's all I have planned. Right now I'm watching Nickelodeon.... it makes me sad when I realize that I'm 21 and watching a channel where the commercials say "ask your parents before getting online..." :( That's all for now folks! Tune out. Every time you watch TV you feed the beast. You help legitimize the view of the world at it is presented on television. Television is filled with sexist imagery and messages. It's filled with racist stereotypes. Now and then when I'm visiting someone and I watch some TV, I'm always shocked at just how bad it is-- especially the sexism-- When you don't watch it every day these things jump out at you more.
So, I'm just going to make the suggestion that you give tuning out a try if you have not already. Don't let people waste your leisure time trying to sell you products so they can make a profit. This might not be so bad if they didn't insult you while they were doing it. But they do.
I mean why put up with it? It's just not worth it: when you watch TV you end up talking about the shows, you become their little promotions machine that tries to get other people to watch. It's just so invasive when you think about it.
So, I'm going to just put it out there: turn it off, screw 'em.
Any day is a good day, why not today? |

US; PA: ACT UP Philly Plans Large DC Protest + Internships Hello Feminist!
Normally, I would only post this on local action groups. But in light of the recent CDC statistics that disclosed that HIV/AIDS infections is on the rise and that past stats were underreported, I was hoping that folks could spread the word and support ACT UP Philly as they connect with other HIV/AIDS orgs across the country in preparation for a large scale action/demo in DC for November, that will address the presidential candidates. They need both local and national assistance, so please be in touch. Their contact info. is contained at the bottom of this forwarded message.
Thanks, dPlease share with your networks! ACT UP Philadelphia, the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, is now in its 20th year of fighting to end the AIDS crisis through direct action. We are planning a substantial action in Washington DC in late November, after we know who the next President will be. Whoever wins, we demand a plan to end AIDS at home and abroad. We need your help to pull this off! Put your skills to use, and learn some new ones from us! We have internship positions available for the following projects: ( Read more... ) |
